Elecampane Root (inula helenium) Organic

Elecampane Root (Inula helenium) A warming aromatic, earthy, pleasantly bitter botanical, traditionally valued for respiratory and digestive wellness. Minglement’s dried elecampane root can be prepared as a gently simmered herbal decoction, homemade tincture, honey-based herbal preparation, or old-fashioned botanical syrup. Known historically as elfwort, horse-heal, and scabwort. This fragrant root reseeds in my garden freele and the bees love it!  The roots contain inulin which feeds friendly bacteria in your colon.     4oz. 8.00

Elecampane Cough Drops

2 cups water

6-8 tbs Elecampane root

2 tbs grated fresh ginger root

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup honey

Pure essential Peppermint oil (optional)

Ground Cinnamon or ground Ginger (optional)

1. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper
2. Bring water to a boil.  Add Elecampane and simmer until the liquid has been reduced to about 1 cup.
3. Turn off the heat and add the Ginger root.  Cover the pot and let steep for 30 minutes
4. Strain and discard the herbs, reserving the liquid.
5. In a heavy-bottom saucepan, combine the liquid, sugar and honey.  Bring to a low boil over medium heat, stirring the bottom often to prevent burning. Simmer until the mixture reaches 300 degrees on a candy thermometer.  Remove from heat and add 1-2 drops peppermint essential oil, if using.
6. Using a teaspoon, drop small rounds of the mixture onto parchment paper.  Allow to cool at room temperature.
7. Dust the hardened cough drops in ground Cinnamon and/or Ginger, to help keep them from sticking.  Wrap in wax paper and store in refrigerator or at room temp.
