Grains have been a dietary cornerstone for millennia. At Minglement, we celebrate ancient whole grains, offering only organic heirloom varieties that are rich in minerals, protein, and essential nutrients. Properly prepared, these grains are not only easily digestible but nutritious too.

Ancient Grains with Historical Significance
Our selection features some of the most celebrated grains in history:

  • Barley: One of the oldest cultivated grains, used by ancient civilizations like the Egyptians for bread and beer.
  • Rye: A staple of European diets for centuries, prized for its hearty flavor and high nutrient content. We love to make hearty bread with this flour.
  • Farro, Emmer, and Einkorn: Grains that date back to the Fertile Crescent and ancient Rome, providing a rich source of protein and fiber.
  • Spelt: Cultivated for over 5,000 years, spelt remains a favorite of our customers for its mild, nutty taste and digestibility.
Many of these grains are sourced locally, supporting sustainable farming practices, while our ancient durum wheat pasta from Italy offers a more flavorful alternative that is easier on those with gluten sensitivities.
  • Many grains are left as an offering of thanks to the spirits of the field in many cultures – For protection and for a good harvest for the coming year.
  • Plenty of heirloom organic flour choices for making bread including sprouted wheat flour.

Nutritional Superstars: Amaranth and Quinoa and Millet
Amaranth and quinoa and millet cultivated for thousands of years by the Aztecs and Incas, are among the most nutritious grains ever grown. Both are naturally gluten-free, packed with complete protein, and rich in vitamins and minerals, making them excellent choices for a balanced diet.

Unique and Nutritious Corn Products
Our colorful corn offerings include:

  • Pink Unicorn Grits: A fun and nutritious twist on traditional grits.
  • Nixtamalized Masa: A process dating back to ancient Mesoamerica, making corn more digestible and enhancing its nutrient profile. A bit of Masa added with our ground cornmeal makes for a rich and delicious cornbread.
  • Hominy (White, Red, Blue): Twice the protein and half the starch of regular corn, providing a gluten-free option that’s almost like eating meat without the fat. Try adding hominy to your soups. Like tofu, hominy will pick up the flavors of the broth.

Why choose Heirloom Grains?

Unlike modern hybridized grains, heirloom varieties are grown from seeds and are often passed down through generations, preserving the genetic diversity critical for resilient food systems. These grains are uniquely adapted to their native environments, thriving without the need for synthetic fertilizers or pesticides.

Cultivated by ancient societies—from the Fertile Crescent to the Roman Empire—they were prized for their robust flavor, high nutritional value, and versatility in cooking. Modern scientific studies affirm their benefits, highlighting higher levels of protein, fiber, and essential minerals compared to modern wheat. Additionally, many ancient grains contain a different gluten structure, which can make them easier to digest for some individuals.

These grains are a culinary and cultural treasure, offering a unique opportunity to create nourishing meals with these simple foods. Know that some of these native environments are disappearing due to over grazing, climate change and human encroachment. Only 11 areas worldwide hold these diverse unique growing environments that protect grains future and only one is in the US. – Try growing these viable seeds in your yard or containers. Watch how they grow and find ways to use them in your everyday life whether as ornamental grown in pots, for food or leave some for wildlife to discover.
